ShakeDown The Town

The treasure hunt TV show coming to a town near you this summer!

Calling all treasure hunters!

Adare Productions are looking for families to SHAKEDOWN THE TOWN they live in, in a brand new TV series for RTÉ One.

Each week the SHAKEDOWN THE TOWN command base will roll into town and two teams, each consisting of 5 family members, will compete against each other to crack the clues and be the first to unlock the safe.

Each team will have 3 code breakers, aged 8-14 years old, in the command base. Meanwhile 2 adults will be chasing around their local town trying to gather the numbers for the safe’s combination lock.

Clues will lead each team to several locations within the town. At each location the teams must complete a challenge to retrieve a number for the safe’s combination lock.

So if you want to SHAKEDOWN YOUR TOWN, then put together your treasure hunt team now!

Each family team must have 3 youngsters, aged 8-14 year-olds. So maybe you, your brother or sister and cousin can join forces with two adults, whether that’s your parents / guardians, uncles or aunts.

In the email they’ll need to tell us their name, their contact number and address, along with the names and ages of the other members of the treasure hunt team.

Filming will take place during June & July, 2014.

All applications must be received by Monday, 26^th May 2014.

Those who are successful will be contacted by Adare Productions by 16^th June, 2014.

Due to numbers applying it may not be possible to contact unsuccessful applicants. If you have not been contacted by the production by that date you have not been selected.  

DRAMA AT WRFM

DRAMA AT WRFM 

WRFM Westport Radio 98.2 plans to hold a series of workshops on writing Radio Drama. The eventual goal of the course will be the production of a series of plays bringing local Radio Drama to the busy schedule at the station 

The workshops will be delivered by John Corless an acclaimed Mayo playwright, who amongst many other accolades is Director of this years Claremorris fringe festival of Drama

It is envisaged that John will facilitate a number of two and a half hour long workshops on writing Radio Drama. The initial phase will be probaly be four weeks in number. It is hoped that the drafts coming from this will be contemporary and will ideally have a local theme or some sort of local connection , but will also have universal appeal. 

The group will then break for three or four weeks when the writers will write up the first draft of their scripts. They will return with a follow up number of weekly sessions to finalise the scripts. John will then produce the plays when the project is at the recording and broadcasting stage

The project is well structured with help and facilitation from begining to end but it must be emphasised that those interested  be aware of the personal commitment involved and to ensure optimum facilitation the number of places on the workshop will be limited.

Burrishoole Walking Festival

BURRISHOOLE is welcoming all walkers this June bank holiday weekend for the annual walking festival.

The festival committee have been putting their best foot forward for 26 years now, an achievement that was recognised when they scooped a Mayo People of the Year award recently.

Again, from Saturday to Monday, June 1 to 3, walking enthusiasts of all levels will enjoy this unique opportunity to explore the countryside off the Great Western Greenway.

An enthusiastic bunch of local volunteers will guide groups through some of Ireland’s most breathtaking landscapes, along low and high level trails overlooking the famous Great Western Greenway and Clew Bay between Newport and Mulranny. Families are also accommodated with walks on the greenway.
Each year the walks attract people from around the world and locals are particularly urged to take a few hours out and enjoy these fabulous walks right on their doorsteps.

Registration takes place in Derrada Community Centre (Derrada National School), outside Newport on the Achill/Mulranny Road, and you can walk for one day, two, or all three. Monday’s walk is to the Oghillie Mass Rock for concelebrated Mass, followed by refreshments in Derrada.

Join us again this year in Westport House and Gardens for our second Darkness into Light in Mayo. Westport is a lovely town and Westport House is the perfect venue to catch the moment in the west. After the 5km run/walk, we’ll head back to the House for a warming cup of tea - and to catch up with everyone who participated! Cycle Against Suicide

The main objective of the Cycle is to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide.
The Cycle, which takes place from Monday, April 22nd to Sunday, May 5th 2013, creates a very tangible and practical opportunity for people who want to support those who have been affected by suicide.
The cycle starts in Dublin on the 22nd of April.  The Galway to Castlebar section takes place on Sunday, 28th April via Ballinrobe and finishes at St. Josephs School in Castlebar. On Monday, 29th April, Castlebar to Sligo via Ballina.

The Riot in the Wyatt

The Riot in the Wyatt is a fundraising event for Mayo Women's Refuge and will take place on Friday, 19th of April at 8:30pm in the Wyatt Hotel.  All funds raised will be used to respond to domestic violence against woman and children.

Night of Irish Music, Culture and Craic!

Charity Night of Irish music, culture and craic!

A night of Irish music, culture and craic will take place in Hotel Westport on Saturday April 13th at 8pm in aid of local children with Cystic Fibrosis.

The night is being organised by Feile Tir na nOg to raise funds for the children's Cystic Fibrosis ward in Mayo General Hospital.

There is a great line up of musical entertainment, story telling with a Seanchaí, dancing and much, much more. There will also be an appearance by some Strawboys!

Pierce O'Reilly from Irish TV is the host and compare on the night.

Feile Tir na Nog is fundraising organisation established over 20 years ago. It regularly organises events to raise funds for worthy causes. The group’s patron is Dr Gabriel Fox FRCPI of Mayo General Hospital.

To date Tir na nOg has raised over €60,000 all of which has been distributed to good causes such as €10,200 for St Anthony’s Special School in Castlebar, €10,400 for the children’s ward of Mayo General Hospital, €5,900 for the Child Leukaemia ward of the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin and €2,000 for the Chickuni Mission in Zambia.

The group has also made donations to many local charities and causes. This year the committee aim to raise €8,000 for the children’s Cystic Fibrosis ward in Castlebar with another fun event for all the family.
